Years ago I watched a satirical, science-fiction comedy movie titled 'Idiocracy'. It was silly. It was entertaining. And there were seeds of metaphorical truth sprinkled throughout (truth that can even be applied to building a real estate business... and illustrate how we're easily distracted by techno-hype.). 

The premise of the movie was about, Private Joe Bauers, who was the epitome of an “average American”. Joe is selected by the Pentagon to be the guinea pig for a top-secret hibernation program. Forgotten, he awakes 500 years in the future. He discovers a society so incredibly dumbed-down that he’s easily the most intelligent person alive.

Joe ends up with the job of fixing the nation's food shortages, dust bowls, and crippled economy. Soon, Joe discovers that the nation's crops are irrigated with a sports drink named "Brawndo" (think Gatorade). To solve the food shortage, Joe simply has to irrigate the crops with **drumroll** water.

Water - the most fundamental, taken-for-granted, substance to sustaining life. We'd hardly grasp it's importance when walking down the soda-isle at the grocery store (which is often similar to walking in the "vendor isle" at most real estate technology events). 

Relationships are the "Water" of Your Real Estate Business.

The truth about building a real estate business is simple - You can’t win enough. You can’t succeed enough. You can’t be good enough of a marketer / Lead generator. The only thing that can satiate that existential thirst is powerful, deep, and beautiful relationships. That’s how businesses are built.

So think about that the next time you're walking (scrolling) down the 'soda isle' of real estate techonolgy - and ask yourself, is this 'water' that is going to fuel my business and help it grow (and last), or will it ultimately leave me in a sugar coma.
